Alnilam

Alnilam

1987

Synopsis:

In Dickey's second novel he used the interesing method of writing the novel in double columns: one column gave the narration of the seeing world and the other column gave the narration of the blind world (what Dickey calls Dark and Light). Dickey began the novel in the 1970's, and despite many forms and excerpts published in various magazines, the novel was not finished until 1987. Alnilam is about a man named Frank Cahill who is searching for his son, whom he has never met. The son, Joel, has crashed in an Air Corps training accident during World War II. Cahill, who is blind because of adult diabetes, travels to the base to learn about his son. While at the base Cahill discovers that Joel may not be dead because his body has not been recovered and some cadets think they have seen him. Joel is a hero to the cadets and Joel was a leader of the secret Alnilam group, named after the middle star in the belt of Orion.
